Sally El Hosaini: Biography Babylon 2009

Writer/Director/Producer

Project Title: MY BROTHER THE DEVIL

Sally El Hosaini is an Egyptian-Welsh writer/director based in London. She loves to write and had her first short story published when she was seven. Growing up in Cairo, Egypt, her eureka moment came when she picked up her fathers' VHS camera and first connected images, words, and people. In 2002 she began working on documentaries that took her to Belgium, Yemen, and post Saddam Iraq. Her award-winning documentaries were screened internationally on BBC, Canal+, ITV, Al Arabiya, and Discovery. She then spent 2 years as a Production Coordinator on feature films learning the A-Z of the process. Her delight in storytelling led to a further 2 ½ years as a Script Editor at BBC Drama. Leaving the BBC to focus on her own films Sally won a regional BAFTA 2008 for her short, The Fifth Bowl, that she wrote and directed. Her latest short, Henna Night, will hit the festival circuit in 2009-10. My Brother The Devil, her first feature film, was selected for both the RAWI Sundance Middle East Screenwriters Lab (Oct 2008) and the Sundance Screenwriters Lab, Utah (Jan 2009).
